The new gold standard in echocardiography is defined by Native Tissue Harmonic Imaging (NTHI) and DELTA Differential Echo Amplification−two powerful technologies that were first introduced on Acuson's Sequoia™ echocardiography system. Now they have migrated to the Aspen™ Advanced system.

Specifications for this system will be available soon.

Albunex
Albunex and Infoson, used mainly in cardiac evaluations, are first generation one-pass-only contrast agents and have been replaced by the new-generation contrast media. Albunex and Infoson are the same sonicated human serum albumin microbubbles. Infoson is licensed and manufactured in Europe, while Albunex was produced in the USA.
Albunex, an air-filled microbubble with a denatured albumin shell (modified from air-filled albumin microspheres prepared from sonicated 5% human serum albumin), was the first FDA-approved contrast agent, but is no longer in production.
Cardiac shunts and valve regurgitations are often evaluated with Color Doppler Imaging (CDI), which also improved with injections of Albunex, but this agent is pressure-sensitive and does not recirculate. It is effectively a one-pass-only agent, limiting its clinical efficacy.

EchoGen®
EchoGen® is a fluorocarbon-based (dodecafluoropentane) third generation USCA. EchoGen® consists of microbubbles stabilized with surfactants in a phase shift colloid emulsion (perflenapent). EchoGen® requires no preparation, reconstitution, or refrigeration.
Perflenapent emulsion would represent a significant advance in contrast echocardiography caused by effective and long lasting opacification of the left ventricle and enhanced endocardial border delineation.
The persistence of the contrast effect permits interrogation in multiple echocardiographic views, as well as the visualization and localization of myocardial perfusion deficits at rest by producing a negative contrast effect.
October 12, 2000
Sonus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced a strategic decision to refocus the Company on the development of its drug delivery and blood substitute products. At the same time, Sonus has withdrawn the NDA (New Drug Application) and discontinued clinical activity for its ultrasound contrast product, EchoGen®.
August 06, 2001
Sonus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its ultrasound contrast assets for $6.5 million to Amersham plc. As part of the agreement, Sonus has also assigned to Nycomed its interest in the ultrasound contrast patent license agreement entered into with Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and Molecular Biosystems Inc in January 2001.

Left Ventricular Opacification
(LVO) Ultrasound contrast agents improve the echocardiography assessment of left ventricular function and the low sensitivity of changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). In addition, harmonic imaging techniques and automated border detection (ABD) together with contrast enhanced left ventricular opacification increase endocardial border delineation (EBD) and the results compared to native echocardiography.
