Transcranial Doppler
(TCD) Transcranial color Doppler sonography allows to evaluate the presence and flow direction of vessels as well as their relationships to surrounding structures.
A disadvantage of cerebrovascular ultrasonography is the attenuation of the ultrasound signal by the skull. The loss of power through the skull is considerable, the signal to noise ratio is poor and so contrast enhanced Doppler imaging is advantageous. The use of ultrasound contrast agents provides a diagnostic window of sufficient duration and imaging quality to improve an evaluation of the cerebral vessels. Contrast TCD also results in visualization of small arteries and veins and greater length of these vessels.

Transesophageal Echocardiography
(TEE) Transesophageal echocardiography provides a superior view of cardiac anatomy compared with transthoracic echocardiography. TEE is performed by the introduction of a probe attached to a fiberoptic endoscope into the esophagus. Caused by the position close to the heart e.g., clot finding and the view of the mitral valve are improved.

Indications:
aortic atherosclerotic disease;
aortic dissection;
artificial mitral valves;
clots inside the left atrium;
cardiac infections;
masses or clots in the heart.

The piezoelectric crystal creating the acoustic power is mounted on the gastroscope that must be swallowed by the patient. This endoscopic transducer is miniaturized to approximately the size of a fingernail. Usually the probe is in place for an average of 15 minutes, to numb the surface a topical anesthetic is sprayed into the throat, in addition a conscious sedation is recommended.

Ultrasonic Contrast Agents
(UCA / USCA) Ultrasonic contrast agents, also called ultrasound contrast agents, are encapsulated bubbles on the order of 1-10 μm in diameter. These gas bubbles are injected into the blood stream in order to increase blood/ tissue contrast during an ultrasonogram. These microbubbles are filled with air or a gas with a lower solubility in blood than air, such as perfluorochemicals. The microbubble shell consists of albumin, phospholipid, or other material and encapsulates the gas core. Due to this construction, ultrasonic contrast agents are highly compressible, and have a high echogenicity.

Vascular Ultrasound
Vascular ultrasound obtains images and measures blood flow velocity in the carotids, abdominal aorta, and vessels of kidneys, arms, or legs. Blockages in arteries, blood clots in veins, or abdominal aortic aneurysm can be detected.
These abnormalities in blood flow are usually examined with different Doppler techniques. In addition, the speed and direction of blood flow can be color coded in a color map. Duplex techniques show both, the vessels and the surrounding tissue. The use of ultrasound contrast agents improves the left ventricular opacification in cardiac ultrasound examination. Usually, for a vascular ultrasound no special preparation is needed.
